Miami-Dade County authorities say late Miami Marlins pitcher José Fernández and his two friends had a strong odor of alcohol when they died in a boat crash last month in Miami Beach. According to a search warrant affadavit obtained by the Miami Herald, investigators found evidence that the boat’s driver—whom they did not identify—was “speeding” and steering the vehicle with “recklessness,” “exacerbated by the consumption of alcohol.” No criminal charges were filed in the crash, and although a toxicology report is complete, the Herald reported Wednesday that the information has yet to be released.
