Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo said his department found no evidence that the alleged rapist in the University of Virginia fraternity case ever existed. Longo announced the findings of a five-month investigation into a rape reported in a Rolling Stone article at a press conference Monday. He said investigators made multiple attempts to locate the alleged rapist, who Jackie identified as “Haven Monahan,” but could not find any trace of him or of the frat party where the attack was said to have happened.
“We’re not able to conclude to any substantive degree that an incident occurred” at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, Longo said, adding: “That doesn’t mean that something terrible didn’t happen to Jackie on the evening of Sept. 28, 2012. We are just not able to gather sufficient facts to what that would have been.” The case, he said, would be suspended but not closed.
