Jeremy Corbyn defeated his challenger to be re-relected leader of Britain’s opposition Labour Party on Saturday, claiming almost 62 percent of the vote. His challenger, Owen Smith, received 38 percent. Corbyn, who has received criticism from some party members for his left-wing views, said from Liverpool on Saturday that he would try to unite party members. “We have much more in common than that which divides us,” he said. “As far as I’m concerned let’s wipe that slate clean from today and get on with the work we’ve got to do as a party.” Corbyn lost a no-confidence vote among his party’s lawmakers over the summer, with many calling for his resignation after his party’s campaign against Brexit was slammed as half-hearted. Corbyn also found himself in hot water for remarks that many interpreted as anti-Semitic, with him appearing to compare the Israeli government to ISIS extremists at an anti-Semitism event in June.
