In non-storm-related airline news, two of the largest airlines are about to become one. A judge approved a settlement on Wednesday between the Justice Department and the proposed merger between AMR Corp (American Airlines) and US Airways Group Inc. The approval will allow American to exit bankruptcy proceedings and merge to create the largest airline in the world. The DOJ had been opposed to the merger on the grounds that it would be anti-competitive and hurt consumers, but negotiations led to the airlines giving up spots at prominent airports around the country.
