Alabama schools can no longer track immigration information about their students, according to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, but police can check immigration status during traffic stops and detain people they suspect of being in the country illegally. The court also left in place the provision blocking undocumented immigrants from entering a “business transaction.” The provision requiring immigrants to carry an alien-registration card was blocked. Many rights groups protested Alabama's law, which is seen to be the toughest in the country, and the Obama administration had requested the legislation be put on hold.
