IDENTITY CRISIS

Czech Republic Wants to Adopt New Name

The Czech Republic is considering a name change to “Czechia” with the aim of making it easier for companies and sports teams to market it on products and clothing. Officials said the country would keep its full name, but use Czechia as the official shortened geographic moniker—much like France is to the French Republic. If parliament approves the name change, the official change will be submitted to the UN. The Czech Republic and Slovakia were both established in 1993 when Czechoslovakia broke into two nations.
