Brooklyn District Attorney Kenneth Thompson sent a letter to the judge presiding over former NYPD officer Peter Liang’s case requesting that he only get house arrest for his fatal shooting of unarmed black man Akai Gurley. Liang would also be required to complete 500 hours of community service and have five years of probation. Gurley’s family said they were devastated by the letter. “We speak as Akai’s mother, aunt, and stepfather,” the relatives said in a statement. “We are outraged at District Attorney Thompson’s inadequate sentencing recommendation. Officer Liang was convicted of manslaughter and should serve time in prison for his crime.”
