The remaining prison escapee from a prison in upstate New York, David Sweat, was shot twice by a state trooper near Coveytown and Constable Burke Town Road, north of Malone, N.Y., on Sunday afternoon, a law enforcement official directly involved in the investigation told The Daily Beast. The 35-year-old escapee was in critical condition at an Albany hospital, police said. Two days earlier, Sweat's fellow escapee, Richard Matt, was shot and killed by a federal agent, and about 1,300 officers had been searching for Sweat. Thirty-six hours before the shooting, authorities found DNA on salt and pepper shakers recovered about a mile north of a perimeter set up following Matt's killing. This helped lead authorities to Sweat's location. "The nightmare is finally over," Cuomo said at a press conference.
