D.C. Mayor Signs Euthanasia Law

Washington D.C. Mayor Mural Bowser on Tuesday signed a law allowing doctors to prescribe end-of-life medication to terminally ill patients with fewer than six months to live. Bowser has not publicly commented on the legislation, which is modeled after Oregon's physician-assisted suicide law. The D.C. law does not yet have any congressional opposition, but might face backlash from Republican legislators. Bowser’s health director LaQuandra Nesbitt objected to elements of the law in a testimony before the city council last year, the Washington Post reports. The law could take effect as early as October 2017.
