Dem Candidate Fudged War Record

Fog of War

Blumenthal never went to Vietnam.

Does this mean former WWE CEO Linda McMahon is going to be our next senator from Connecticut? When speaking at veterans’ ceremonies and other patriotic events, the frontrunner to succeed Senator Chris Dodd, Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, has recounted his experience in Vietnam and has often drawn from his supposed time there during public speeches. Blumenthal, however, never went to Vietnam, reports The New York Times. Instead, he received at least five military deferments and avoided going to war by landing a spot in a Marine Reserve unit based in Washington, D.C. Blumenthal has been recorded saying phrases like, “I served during the Vietnam era,” “When we returned, we saw nothing like this,” and “We have learned something important since the days that I served in Vietnam.” But in an interview with the Times, the attorney general admitted that he may have misspoken. His remarks have led to frequent misunderstandings about his service. The Connecticut Post reported that he was “a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War,” and the New Haven Register described him as having “served in the Marines in Vietnam.”
