House Democrats are demanding that the White House provide answers on how a contractor accused of attempted murder, assault, and domestic violence managed to obtain a security clearance and a job at the National Security Council. In a letter to White House chief of staff John Kelly Thursday, House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform member Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) asked that the White House turn over all documents on Martese Edwards, who was arrested by the Secret Service on Tuesday on an outstanding May 17 warrant for attempted murder. Citing The Daily Beast’s reporting, Cummings wrote that the news raises “grave questions” about White House vetting in the wake of its hiring of alleged wife-beater Rob Porter.
