Even at the height of President Obama’s popularity around the 2008 election, one age group never got behind him: voters over the age of 65. And with the midterm elections fast approaching, Democrats are realizing that courting that group could be more difficult than ever. Despite the White House’s commitment to Social Security, many older voters have become disenchanted with Obama, particularly since his health-care legislation was passed. According to a recent Gallup poll, 53 percent of seniors said they will be backing a Republican House candidate this November, while only 38 percent said they would be voting for a Democrat. "They are the voting group we are doing the worst with," said one Democratic pollster. "They are also the voting group with the highest turnout in an off-year election. So it is going to be up to the individual members of Congress to go out there and make their case personally to seniors in their districts."
