Some top Democrats say they want White House press secretary Robert Gibbs to be the next chairman of the Democratic National Committee, and hope Gibbs will make the move as the party gears up for the 2012 presidential election. Current DNC Chairman Tim Kaine would get an administration post, perhaps in the Cabinet. Democratic donors like the idea, but although Gibbs has been looking to leave his current job, he was aiming to become a senior adviser to the president. Insiders say Gibbs would be good at the DNC job because he’s a “great partisan fighter.” Plus, with 2008 campaign adviser David Plouffe likely coming to the White House, Obama would have plenty of trusted aides at his side, and Gibbs could increase the circle’s influence on the party. The plan is called “the Ed Gillespie mode,” after the Republican adviser who headed the Republican National Committee during the 2004 election, and later moved to the White House to counsel Bush.
