Danish officials said on Wednesday a Danish tourist was infected by the Zika virus after visiting southern and central America, confirming Europe’s first case. The patient had a fever, headache, and muscle aches and was diagnosed on Tuesday, according to a statement from Aarhus University Hospital. The hospital said there is little risk of it spreading in Denmark since the mosquito carrying the virus is not in the country. On Tuesday, President Obama called on health officials to step up efforts and accelerate development of vaccines and treatments to fight the Zika virus, which is expected to spread across the United States in warmer months. The virus has been linked to brain damage in thousands of babies in Brazil and there is no current treatment for it.
