Eight employees of a drug-rehab program for Los Angeles County schools were charged Wednesday in a $46 million fraud scheme. Authorities allege the women inflated the problems faced by youth who dabbled in drugs in order to get more resources, while at the same time neglecting to provide those with serious addictions the help needed to recover. “The defendants and [the company] branded many innocent young people as substance abusers and addicts in order to boost enrollment numbers and billings,” the U.S. Attorney said. A dozen others involved in the scheme have pleaded guilty, including the doctor who diagnosed many of the youths as having a problem.
