Christopher Nolan’s World War II epic Dunkirk dominated both overseas and domestic theaters this weekend, opening with an estimated $105.9 million in ticket sales. The Warner Bros. film raked in $50.5 million in North American theaters, combined with $55.4 million in a partial release overseas. The film, based on the military operation to rescue 300,000 British soldiers trapped by Nazi forces on the beaches of Dunkirk, France, brought in about 20 percent more than analysts predicted. Wonder Woman brought Warner Bros. another win this weekend, becoming the summer’s highest grossing film with $389 million in ticket sales so far. Meanwhile, Luc Besson’s highly anticipated Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets flopped in its opening weekend, bringing in a mere $17 million domestically. The sci-fi epic cost $180 million to make.
