Early HIV Less Infectious Than Believed

New hopes for AIDS prevention.

A new study has dispelled the notion that HIV is highly contagious during the first few weeks after infection. Instead, researchers at the University of Texas-Austin revealed HIV’s infection hazard to be nine times smaller during its early stages than initially believed. That argues for antiretroviral treatment to be used as a preventative measure, the researchers say.
