John Edwards will face a federal judge Wednesday in an effort to dismiss the campaign-finance charges against him. Edwards’s lawyers argued in five separate motions last month that the case was sought by a partisan Republican prosecutor focused on taking down the former presidential candidate. Prosecutors, in turn, filed a stack of motions backing up their charges and saying a dismissal would not be based in the law. Edwards, 58, has been charged with using $1 million from campaign donors to cover up an affair with Rielle Hunter, and he has pleaded not guilty and claimed he never broke any laws.
