Five leaders of the now-banned Muslim Brotherhood were sentenced to life in jail by an Egyptian court on Saturday over clashes that killed 11 and wounded 91 in the days before Islamist President Mohammed Morsi was forced from office. The men—Brotherhood Supreme Guide Mohammed Badie, his deputy Khairat al-Shater, former lawmaker Mohammed el-Beltagy, party head Saad el-Katatni and his deputy, Essam el-Erian—are being charged with murder and possession of firearms. Nine others were also sentenced to life and four Brotherhood members were sentenced to death, though the verdict can be appealed.
