Egypt Death Toll Rises to at Least 278

It was a bloody day in Egypt as police forcibly removed pro–Mohamed Morsi protesters from the streets of Cairo. The Egyptian Health Ministry estimated that 235 civilians had been killed while the Interior Ministry said that 43 policemen died in the fighting. Another 900 people were injured, many seriously, leaving observers to believe the death toll would climb much higher. One man was burned alive in a tent while scores more were shot. The interim government, appointed by the military, declared a one-month state of emergency, suspended due-process laws, and imposed a 7 p.m. curfew. Angry protesters fought back, attacking police stations and churches across the country.
