Egypt Expels 669 Police

Egypt has fired close to 700 of its much-criticized police force. The move marks another victory for the country’s activists, following the state news agency’s announcement that parliamentary elections will be postponed until October or November from the initial September date. Remnants of the Mubarak regime and the nearly 900 protesters killed by police during the uprising are the primary motivations behind the police-force purge. Of the dismissed officers, 37 will face charges. The Egyptian military also plans to draft a series of regulations for selecting the 100-person assembly charged with the task of writing a new constitution.
