At least 12 people were killed on Saturday in deadly riots in Cairo, the third day of violence since more than 70 people were killed earlier this week after a soccer match. Police fired tear gas and birdshot at protesters on Saturday, while dozens of protesters threw stones at the officers guarding the Interior Ministry. Egyptian media reported that five people were also hurt overnight in clashes outside police headquarters in Alexandria, on the Mediterranean Sea. Clashes have erupted in Egypt for three days in protest over what many believe is the government’s failure to provide security after riots after a soccer game killed more than 70 people on Wednesday. On Saturday, the Egyptian soccer federation president and board of directors resigned—although they had already been fired two days ago by the country’s prime minister.
