The Berkeley provost criticized for his lax discipline announced his resignation on Friday. Citing his wife’s poor health, Claude Steele said, “The choice has thus become clear: I can no longer offer UC Berkeley the time and level of commitment it needs from its (provost), while at the same time being a part of my family in the way I want to be.” Steele became the center of controversy last month when a law school staff member revealed that she had been sexually harassed by the school’s dean and Steele had punished the dean with only a temporary pay cut and an order to undergo counseling.
