Attorney General Eric Holder announced Thursday that the Department of Justice will sue Texas over a new voter-ID law, its second action against Texas since the Supreme Court struck down parts of the Voting Rights Act earlier this year. “We will not allow the Supreme Court’s recent decision to be interpreted as open season for states to pursue measures that suppress voting rights,” Holder said in a statement. Holder has also asked a federal judge to require Texas to get preclearance of its congressional redistricting process due to the state’s history of “intentional voter discrimination.” Holder has led the Justice Department in a campaign to protect voting rights in the wake of the court's decision and considers it a key part of his legacy.
