European Union leaders agreed Tuesday to resettle 120,000 asylum-seekers in an effort to curb the flow of migrants into Greece and Italy, and redistribute them throughout the 28-nation bloc. The Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, and Hungary voted against the plan, and it’s unclear whether they will follow through with its implementation. European Commission First Vice President Frans Timmermans conceded the deal was not a resolution to the flood of migrants entering Europe, but urged all member states to “respect the outcome” of the relocation plan. The new proposal calls for initially relocating 66,000 asylum-seekers from Greece and Italy, which is a fraction of the 477,906 people who the UN says arrived in Europe by sea this year.
