Former New York State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos was sentenced Thursday to five years in prison following his December conviction on corruption charges. Skelos reportedly used his political power to help get jobs for his son Adam, who is also expected to be sentenced soon. Tapes allegedly showed the elder Skelos coerced companies into forking over more than $330,000 to his 33-year-old son. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Masimore said: “You can’t argue that you robbed a bank repeatedly over a course of years and you did it for your family. I think the evidence was very clear that Dean Skelos was strong-arming these victims and forcing them to pay.” He added, “Dean Skelos knew better. He knew better than to do this.”
