On October 28, 1991, celebrated rock photographer Kirk Weddle shot promotional photos for Nirvana, mimicking Nevermind’s iconic naked baby album cover image. His idea was to toss them into a pool in Los Angeles in the cold, and bandmates Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl were apparently not in the mood, and wiped after coming off tour. “I remember Kurt was like, ‘Fuck! I have to get in the pool?’” Weddle recalls. “He was not a water guy at all.”
The photos are being displayed for the first time at Steven Walker’s Modern Rocks Gallery in Austin, Texas. You can check them all out there, and some of them are being unveiled exclusively here at The Daily Beast.
“They show a band on the verge of changing the face of music, a band about to conquer the world, a band about to release something that was to become one of the most influential albums of our time,” says Walker. “But, they also show a band on tour, a band that are tired, a band that are probably homesick and a little bit grumpy, too. And, a band that has just been thrown in a swimming pool on their day off because someone from the record company told them that’s what they had to do… and that’s why I love them!”
