ISIS, the militant group laying waste to swaths of Iraq and Syria, has been described as more technologically sophisticated than its progenitor, al Qaeda, and now at least one expert says the group is the next great Internet threat. Terrorist organizations are hoarding cyber weaponry procured from underground markets, and ISIS is likely to follow in the footsteps of the Syrian Electronic Army and the Iran-based Ajax Security Team in targeting Western countries and corporations with cyberattacks, the CEO of FireEye, a leading cybersecurity company, tells the Financial Times. The executive, David De Walt, said ISIS will advance its technology as fast as it can and target something “as big and sensationalized as possible.”
