An exploding Takata air bag killed a 17-year-old Texas teenager when her Honda Civic crashed near Houston. The girl’s car rear-ended another vehicle in what police called a “moderate” crash. But the air bag was deployed, sending shrapnel into her neck. Malfunctioning air-bag inflators from the company have claimed at least 10 lives so far in the U.S., injured an additional 100, and created the biggest auto recall in U.S. history. The air bags explode when faced with too much force, typically causing them to send shards of metal at drivers and passengers. Officials said the teen’s family was not aware of the recall before the crash.
