New York’s writers, make a toast: Elaine Kaufman, the owner of the Upper East Side restaurant Elaine’s died on Friday at the age of 81. Elaine’s was a popular hangout for New York’s writers and celebrities. "Writers have never come to my place to talk about literature," she told Vanity Fair last year. “They come to escape writing.” Kaufman was born in New York in 1929 and opened the restaurant in 1963.
