FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe plans to retire in a few months amid Republican calls for him to resign, The Washington Post reports, citing sources familiar with the matter. McCabe, who served as former FBI director James Comey’s right-hand man, has been under increasing scrutiny from Republican lawmakers over what they see as an anti-Trump bias within the agency. McCabe was grilled by lawmakers earlier this week over the FBI’s ongoing Russia investigation and the probe into Hillary Clinton’s private email server. Republican criticism was bolstered earlier this month when The Washington Post reported that one of McCabe’s senior advisers, FBI lawyer Lisa Page, had sent anti-Trump text messages to Peter Strzok, the top FBI agent on special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe. Democrats have described Republican attacks on McCabe as political opportunism, however. “It’s disappointing to see how the criticism of the FBI is being used to try to undermine the credibility of the Mueller investigation,” John Pistole, who served as the FBI’s deputy director under former director Robert S. Mueller III, told the Post.
