The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has proposed banning electrical stimulation devices (ESDs) in therepy treatments. The proposal, issued Friday, would end the controversial treatment in the only facility where it is still practiced, the Judge Rotenberg Educational Center, a Boston-area school that treats children with developmental disorders, including autism. The FDA argues that electric shock therapy presents an "unreasonable and substantial risk to public health," putting patients at risk for depression, anxiety, PTSD, and burns.
