President Trump’s former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, and his longtime protégé, Rick Gates, were told to surrender to federal authorities on Monday morning, The New York Times first reported. The 12 charges laid against Manafort and Gates mark an important escalation in the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election. Manafort has for months been under investigation for federal tax violations, in addition to money laundering and inappropriate disclosure of his foreign lobbying.
