A $41.5 million lawsuit was filed Thursday by the Black Lawyers for Justice on behalf of five protesters who were arrested, beaten, tear-gassed or shot with rubber bullets in Ferguson, Missouri. The suit names Ferguson, St. Louis County, the police chiefs of both, and named and unnamed officers. One of the “Ferguson Five,” 23-year-old Dwayne Matthews Jr., said he was walking too his mother’s house when he was confronted by police, shot with rubber bullets multiple times, almost drowned in a drainage ditch, and was pepper-sprayed. He says police used racial epithets during the arrest and called him “mop-head.”
