Fiery Wreck Delays Daytona 500

Will the checkered flag ever fly? The finish to an already-delayed Daytona 500 has been further pushed back after a race car smashed into a jet drier during a caution-flag lap, sending a fiery ball hurling onto the track. NASCAR’s season-starting race had been held until Monday for the first time in its 54-year history after rains pounded the Daytona Beach, Fla., area over much of the weekend. But the race could be called under a red flag, meaning it is over where it stands (on lap 161 of 200) after the No. 42 Chevrolet car driven by Juan Pablo Montoya went out of control and caused the dramatic crash, causing damage to the track. The last time the race was halted was in 2009, when—surprise!—rain shortened the event.
