Recently surfaced video shows Rodrigo “Digong” Duterte, a leading presidential contender in the Philippines and mayor of Davao City, making an awful joke about a 1989 gang-rape case during a recent campaign rally. “When the bodies were brought out, they were wrapped,” he said. “I looked at her face, son of a bitch, she looks like a beautiful American actress... What came to mind was, they raped her, they lined up.... she was so beautiful, [I] should have been first. What a waste.” He appeared to be referring to an incident when inmates at a jail in Davao City overpowered guards, took their weapons, and then took 15 people hostage, including a 36-year-old Australian, Jacqueline Hamill, who was ministering at the jail. She was gang-raped and her throat was slashed; she was killed by crossfire when officials tried to regain control of the prison. Several commentators have called Duterte the Filipino equivalent of Donald Trump.
