Five Die in Colorado Avalanche

Series of storms blamed for treacherous conditions.

An avalanche killed five snowboarders 60 miles west of Denver Saturday. A sixth snowboarder dug himself out and called for help. Forecaster Spencer Logan said there have been weak layers in Colorado's snowpack since early January and, "Our last series of storms made them more active again.” The snowboarders were in backcountry terrain, well away from established ski paths. Twenty-one people have died in U.S. avalanches this year.
