Floods Prompt Evacuations in Australia

Towns emptied, crops destroyed.

Northeastern Australia is under water. Around 1,000 people in Queensland have been evacuated and three towns declared disaster areas after heavy rains inundated the state. Army helicopters evacuated residents in the town of Theodore, where the river has risen 20 inches above the previous record. Coal shipments have been disrupted and cotton crops destroyed. But the worst is yet to come, as water flows from drenched land into the already flooded rivers.
