Florida Protests ‘Stand Your Ground’

Florida lawmakers are pushing for a special session to consider changing the state’s controversial “stand your ground” law, the one that made it difficult for a jury to convict George Zimmerman in the shooting of Trayvon Martin. “This bill encourages people to shoot their way out of situations, and that’s not how we live in a civilized society,” state Democratic leader Chris Smith said. Florida legislators fear that high-profile boycotts of the state could intensify if the law isn’t changed. Meanwhile, dozens of young protesters have been occupying Gov. Rick Scott’s office demanding a reconsideration of the law.
