At the nubile age of 17, Elizabeth Taylor was as passionate as she proved to be in her subsequent eight marriages, pouring her heart out in love letters to the one who got away. RR Auctions, based in Amherst, New Hampshire, bought the letters two years ago from their recipient, William Pawley, then a 22-year-old ambassador to Brazil and the first man to win Taylor's heart—or at least the first of many to get down on one knee. The letters—some written in purple ink on pink paper—were sent around the time that the pair was engaged in 1949, shortly before she married someone else. "I've never loved anyone in my life before one third as much as I love you—and I never will." Famous last words. Sixty letters will be auctioned off during the week of May 19-26, and are estimated to be worth up to $100,000.
