Foreign Press Grasps for Reasons to Write About U.S. Election

Foreign reporters don't know what to make of the ongoing U.S. presidential election and are searching for ways to apply the candidates' stories locally. British papers have reported on Ann Romney's Welsh roots and the Italian press has latched onto Rick Santorum's relation to Communist Party members. An Austrian newspaper was thrilled to learn that Ron Paul's favorite movie was The Sound of Music, so they could write about him. And a profile on the Duggar family—of TLC's 19 Kids and Counting—was the closest a French magazine editor would allow to covering the primary campaign (they stumped for Santorum in Iowa). Mr. Duggar didn't read the story, though, "because it was in French or something," he said.
