In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court on Monday struck down a lower court’s 2014 conviction of former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell on corruption charges. McDonnell was sentenced to two years behind bars at the time, but has avoided jail time during the appeal process. The former Republican governor was accused of accepting bribes in exchange for favors. The Supreme Court, however, disagreed with prosecutors’ narrow definition of an “official act” of exchanging gifts.
