Less than two weeks after France passed a new law legalizing same-sex marriage—and just days after an anti-gay-marriage rally drew over 150,000—the first official gay married couple emerged hand in hand smiling from the town hall in Montpellier. Vincent Autin and Bruno Boileau walked down the aisle to Nat King Cole’s “Love Was Made for You and Me,” as hundreds of friends gathered to watch the emotional—and historic—moment. “Our society cannot have any prejudices,” Montpellier Mayor Hélène Mandroux said moments before they wed. While same-sex marriage has been legalized, the fight for gay parenting rights in the staunchly traditional country remains ongoing.
