Galvanized by the death of Hamza al-Khatib, the 13-year-old boy who activists say was tortured, thousands of protesters took to the streets in Syria in one of the largest demonstrations so far. The government was brutal in its response, firing on a crowd of 50,000 people in the city of Hama, killing at least 60 people. The government has also reportedly cut Internet service in parts of the country in an attempt to prevent activists from uploading video of the crackdown. The protest was dedicated to children killed during the uprising. This week, the U.N. Children's Fund highlighted the death of at least 30 young people so far.
