Fukushima Kids Are Getting Cancer

Children living near Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power plant get thyroid cancer 20 to 50 times more than their counterparts elsewhere, a new study claims. As many as 370,000 children in the area have been screened since the 2011 meltdown at the facility. In August, 137 had confirmed or suspected thyroid cancer—up 25 percent from the previous year. The typical rate of occurrence is one or two kids per million, according to the AP. Officials insist that stringent monitoring of the plant area means there are no serious health risks for those who live nearby.
