The former rebels entered from the east for the first time, helped by NATO warplanes. The battle has raged on for a few days in the city, with pro-Gaddafi forces pushing back the fighters entering from the west over the weekend. As the siege intensifies, fear of an rising civilian toll has increased. A Gaddafi spokesman has said that NATO bombings have killed hundreds in Sirte.
