Garbiñe Muguruza Beats Venus Williams for First Wimbledon Title
Garbiñe Muguruza beat five-time champion Venus Williams at Wimbledon on Saturday, becoming the first Spanish woman to claim the singles title since 1994. The 23-year-old Muguruza powered her way through the tournament, winning the final’s last nine games and ultimately cinching victory by challenging a call initially made in Williams’ favor. After a review showed that Williams’ shot had indeed been out, Muguruza dropped her racket, sank to her knees, and covered her face to cry before embracing Williams at the net. “I grew up watching her play, so it’s incredible to play her in the final,” Muguruza said. She also recalled that she’d lost to Williams’ younger sister, Serena, in the 2015 Grand Slam final. “She told me one day I was going to maybe win. So two years after, here I am,” she said. Her 7-5 6-0 victory adds to her win at the French Open last year.
