General: More Troops Needed in Afghanistan

Gen. John Nicholson, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, said the U.S. or other nations that are part of the coalition need to send a “few thousand” more troops to the fragile country in order to complete their mission. Nicholson, testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee, said Afghan troops need more training so that they can eventually carry out their duties on their own, without U.S. or coalition help. Nicholson added that Russia is pushing a “false narrative” that it is fighting terrorists while the Afghan forces are not, and said Taliban leaders were invited to Moscow for talks while government representatives were not.
