Gabby Giffords is not backing away from her demons. The former Arizona congresswoman returned to the Tuscon parking lot where she was nearly killed, and six others were killed, by a gunman two years ago. “Be bold. Be courageous. Be for background checks,” said Giffords, urging Arizona Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake to back legislation to require background checks on all gun transfers or purchases. Giffords and husband Mark Kelly founded a gun-control advocacy group to challenge the National Rifle Association’s power in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre. In November Jared Loughner, the Tuscon gunman, was sentenced to life in prison.
