When Robert DeNiro asked a crowd full of celebrities gathered for an Obama fundraiser at his New York restaurant Locanda Verde whether “our country is ready for a white first lady” they “roared” with laughter. Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich, however, was not amused by what was clearly a joke. While campaigning in Shreveport, La., Tuesday, Gingrich actually urged the president to apologize for DeNiro’s quip, calling it “inexcusable.” He said, “I do want to say one thing, both on behalf of my wife and on behalf of Karen Santorum and on behalf of Anne Romney, I think that Robert DeNiro’s wrong. I think the country is ready for a new first lady and he doesn’t have to describe it in racial terms.”
